How did you meet and get engaged? We met because our friends were going out together and as a result we were friends for a long time before we became a couple.  Jerry made a move at the Listowel Races in 2009 but I was leaving for a semester abroad the following day and knew it was best not to start anything before I left, instantly regretting my decision and (as my best friend always reminds me) drowning my sorrows in a garlic cheese chip later that night.  Then sometime in June 2010 at a friend’s 21st when he was severely sunburnt from a day in the bog he plucked up the courage to make another move, this time in the Swanky Bar, Tarbert and the rest as they say is history. Jerry proposed on Beale Beach a few days before Christmas while we were walking our 2 dogs.  He pretty much threw the promise ring at me because just as he was going to propose the dogs decided to chase a horse down the beach! The following day we went shopping for a ring in Killarney and later that night we had drinks with family and friends to celebrate.

Describe your wedding: The colour scheme for the wedding was sage green and grey.  I didn’t set out with a colour scheme in mind I just found really nice bridesmaid dresses and went from there.  We didn’t really have a theme per se either but did try to incorporate as much of our own likes and interests as possible.  I’m a Maths teacher so we had a maths themed invite which showed images of both our likes and interests.  Our table plan theme was “Pure bred or Pure genius?”, again a nod at my profession and also Jerry’s hobby of farming.  The individual table names were either a mathematician or a breed of cattle! Our entrance song to the reception was “Stand Up and Fight” as we are big Munster rugby fans!

Tell us about your bridal look: I wanted a very simple, comfortable and easy to wear dress which is why I opted not to wear any veil and just had a tiara instead.  I wore my hair up again for practical reasons, I didn’t want it getting ruined in the wind/rain.  My usual hairdresser Hair Creations, Listowel did my hair and FMN Make Up and Hair did my make up. It lasted all night and I can safely say my hair and make up was just as good going to bed at 5am than it was before the church.

What did your bridesmaids wear? My bridesmaids wore short, satin, sage green dresses from Coast.  The girls loved them and have said they will wear them again!!  They all wore their hair up and silver shoes of their choice.  As a thank you, I bought them simple earrings and bracelet from Links of London.

What was your ceremony like? We had a Church ceremony in my local church.  We asked a priest that had close connections to Jerry’s family to marry us and he really added to the ceremony.  He kept it very relaxed and made us feel very at ease.  Eve Stafford Soprano and Ger O’Donnell performed our church music and they created such a special atmosphere with it.  We kept the ceremony fairly traditional apart from our communion reflection which was the poem “Scaffolding” by Seamus Heaney.

Tell us about your wedding venue: Choosing the Brehon was the best decision we made! We loved the hotel for years and always said we would have our wedding there and it really did live up to our dream venue.  Sharon and Catriona went above and beyond for us and the whole day ran so smoothly as a result.  The food was beautiful! We opted for fillet steak cooked to order for one of our mains and our guests are still talking about it.  The drinks reception on the mezzanine was a big part of why we booked the Brehon.  We loved the idea of our drinks reception being separate to the main bar and getting the photo of us walking in and looking up at our guests cheering us on from the balcony!  Part of the package was a pianist during the drinks reception which allowed us to spend money on another form of entertainment – Leon Anderson – a magician who was loved by all guests big and small!

Wedding photographer and videographer: Jerry found an article about Ciara in the Kerry’s Eye and when I contacted her she was so easy to talk to I knew she was the photographer for us.  She was so laid back but still got all our photos taken quickly and made sure we were at our reception on time which was very important to us.  One of my bridesmaids has since booked her for her wedding which says it all really!!  Videographer: Brendan Reidy Videography;  On the day Brendan blended in so well and made everyone feel at ease which isn’t easy when you’re holding a camera!!  We love our video and definitely recommend any couple to have one.  It’s so lovely to watch back, relive all the best bits and for me especially take in parts that were a complete blur on the day.

What is your favourite memory from your wedding day? We both would say seeing each other for the first time at the altar! All the waiting was finally over!  After that the day just kept getting better and better!

Have you got any advice for other couples? Take moments throughout the day for just the 2 of you!! It’s difficult to do but so worth it.  Also take a moment to step back and just watch.  I loved watching our guests dancing and enjoying themselves knowing we had planned it all!  Photos are important but don’t let them take over the whole day! You will have loads to chose from for an album and you will love them all but you will never again get the chance to be present on your wedding day!!
