A Vegan, Mix and Match Wedding With a Dog!

Real Weddings

“Our wedding was quite unusual. Firstly, we had a vegan wedding which is not the norm but felt like an obvious choice for us. We included our dog Sally on the day and it was the best decision we made.”

Names: Emily White & Sean Waters

Length of engagement: 16 months

Wedding Date: 20th July 2019

Wedding location: Ceremony in Malahide Castle followed by reception in Malahide Rugby Club

Photographer: Keith Gordon Photography

We met… in Primary school! We met again as adults just before we both turned 22!

Our proposal… Sean proposed to Emily on a hike in Tenerife! He carried around a miniature bottle of prosecco for celebrating! He proposed with a “You, Me and Magic” grey diamond Chupi ring (Irish designer).

Our wedding theme/colours… We went for blush pink and rose gold and a relaxed style for the bridal party. Emily wore a Ted Baker dress with rose gold sandals and flower crown. Sean wore Chinos and a blazer with no tie. The bridesmaids/flower girls wore mismatched blush pink dresses that they chose themselves. One of the girls wore a jumpsuit. The men wore cream chinos and navy blazers but they were also mismatched. We didn’t want a very formal look.

Things we DIY’d/made ourselves… Emily arranged the flowers with her sister-in-law. They bought the flowers at a cash and carry market and arranged the flowers the day before the wedding.  Emily made her flower crown herself. All the flowers from the flower crown were wild flowers picked from her local area the day before. The flowers on the tables at the venue were also arranged by Emily and her sister in law.

My dress… Emily’s dress was from Ted Baker. She bought it in Brown Thomas about a year before the wedding. It’s midi length and has pockets!

My hair and make up… Hair was by Shakira Clohessy and make-up by Lisa Griffin (make up nerd). Emily was delighted with both.

His suit… Sean wore a pair of Ted Baker chinos in a mauve colour with a navy blazer from Next. He didn’t wear a tie as he wanted to keep the look casual.

What our bridal party wore… The 3 bridemaids and 3 flower girls wore mismatched dresses but all in a blush pink. The bridesmaids chose what they wore and Emily picked up the flower girls dresses in TK Max.

Our ceremony…was perfect! It was outdoors in the walled garden in Malahide Castle. It was so special and just wonderful. We got so lucky with fabulous weather that day even though it was supposed to rain. Emily and Sean’s dog Sally the border collie, walked up the aisle too which added to the fun! The ceremony was performed by an interfaith minister called Ann Dempsey. She was just brilliant. Emily’s brother and Sean’s sister both did surprise readings which we loved. Emily’s student’s from school played in a string quartet and Emily’s friend Kayla from choir sang with them. It was a very personal and relaxed ceremony. We laughed all the way through and could hardly get vows out with all the laughing!

We chose our photographer because… we won him! Emily entered a competition and won! Keith was absolutely brilliant. We are so happy with the photos and he was brilliant with our dog…he is a dog whisperer! He is also a landscape photographer which really shows in the photos. They are so green and so well framed! We are both big outdoorsy people so it was a match made in heaven!

We chose our venue because…we wanted to get married outdoors for the ceremony and we live nearby. For the reception, we wanted it to be really bright and relaxed and convenient for our guests. Neither of us was keen on having it in a hotel function room.

Our menu…was vegan! We are both vegan so seemed like a great idea to have a vegan wedding! Kyle’s Catering who base themselves out of Malahide Rugby Club did an amazing job! We decided to go with three tapas style main courses along with a soup, another starter and a desert. Our wedding cake was created by the wonderful Dorone Paris, the wonderful owner of Vine Catering.

Our honeymoon… was so us! We set off for the Dolomites in Northern Italy 3 days after the wedding for 2 weeks. We travelled around to 5 different locations, spending our time hiking and cycling in the mountains. It’s the most beautiful place we have ever travelled to and most people we spoke to hadn’t heard of the Dolomites!

My favourite part of the wedding day… the ceremony! The venue was just so beautiful and it was really fun and personal. We didn’t take ourselves too seriously and it didn’t take too long!

My piece of advice for other couples… Don’t sweat the small things. We honestly never got stressed out about anything. It all worked out on the day! We made sure to spend our money on the things that mattered…food, booze and entertainment! We also tried to keep it as casual and relaxed as we could. Our only regret is that we didn’t start the day earlier. It went so quick!

What is it that makes your wedding unique? Our wedding was quite unusual. Firstly, we had a vegan wedding which is not the norm but felt like an obvious choice for us. We included our dog Sally on the day and it was the best decision we made. There was so much laughter at the ceremony and Sally was the main cause of that! Getting married in Malahide Castle Walled Garden was also an unusual choice as they don’t hold many weddings there and it was just beautiful and so special.
