Ask the Experts – “Can the Shape of your Wedding Bouquet Affect how you Look?”

Décor & Flowers, Planning & Advice

I heard that your bouquet can make you look ‘bigger’ if you don’t choose the right style… Is there a truth to this?! Should you pick your bouquet based on your body type? – Lana

Hi Lana. This is not entirely true but there are few things to keep in mind with your bouquet to ensure it does not make you look “bigger”. We would recommend bouquets depending on the wedding dress shape, mainly the skirt as this is the backdrop of the bouquet for the day. Also how you hold the bouquet can sometimes make a bride look “bigger”. We recommend holding around the belly button and to leave space between your arm and body. Wedding photographers also are aware of these tips and will guide you on the day so I wouldn’t worry about it. Hope this helps!

Hi Lana. When choosing your bridal flowers there are two main things to consider; your wedding dress and the overall style and theme of your wedding. Our bouquets are all custom made to order, and we create our styles while keeping in mind the bride’s personality and taste. Here is a quick run down of some aspects for you to consider:

  • The Round Hand Tie bouquet is easy to carry, but needs to be kept in proportion to the dress and bride.
  • Big gowns need a balance of bigger and fuller bunches of blooms, while keeping in mind the overall shape and look.
  • ‘Shower’ or cascade style of bouquet suit taller brides best.
  • Short dresses look best with smaller or petite bouquets or just minimal stems.

The bouquet you choose should highlight and balance your overall look, it shouldn’t be overpowering or unmanageable.  Your wedding flowers create a balance and harmony between your body shape, gown, personality and finally the theme of your wedding. The paragraph below gives a summary of the different body shapes and bouquets that compliment your shape.

Arm sheaf bouquets are perfect for a pear-shaped figure – when held across the arms it draws the eye upwards to your defined waist. A teardrop bouquet is a longer style bouquet with long trailing flowers and greenery, this will elongate the shape of a classic curvy figure. The ever popular hand tied bouquet – a classic round shape bouquet tied at the stems – works beautifully for apple-shaped brides. Smaller than a posy bouquet, a nosegay bouquet traditionally has a mix of flowers and is hand-tied with ribbon. The neat nosegay bouquet is perfect for taller brides as, rather than a long stemmed bouquet that elongates the figure, a pretty nosegay style draws the eye in to a central point. Mix length hand tied bouquets have a relaxed shape which gives off a rustic ‘undone’ feel – this style is perfect for softening a boyish frame and creating a gentle feminine feel.

Depending on the dress you have chosen you will need to use your own judgement about what bouquet is best for you.
