A Magical Turquoise Seaside Wedding

Articles, Real Weddings

“I chose the cool turquoise of the sea as my bridesmaid dress colour. Again the Salthill matched this with having turquoise sashes for seats, and the lighting matched this perfectly.”

Your Names: Deirdre Kelly and Colm Hawe

Length of engagement: 16months

Wedding Date: 2019-06-08

Wedding location: Salthill Hotel

Photographer: Paul Duane

How did you meet and get engaged?
We’re very sporty people. We met in Galway Triathlon Club. Colm proposed in the kitchen one evening after a cycle, not romantic, just sporty! ‘Protein shake?’ ‘Will you marry me?’

Describe your wedding:
So as you can guess Cycling was our theme. Our invitations had bikes! Our Mass booklet had a photo of us changing a puncture, the priest even brought it up in the Sermon! Hazel in The Salthill Hotel even incorporated bikes into the menu! I chose the cool turquoise of the sea as my bridesmaid dress colour. Again the Salthill matched this with having turquoise sashes for seats, and the lighting matched this perfectly.

Tell us about your bridal look :
Belladonna Bridal were superb… my dress was the very first one I tried on! Satin with sparkle on the shoulders and back. Venus Sadie, make and model.  The fabulous Natalie O Brien did my hair in a fab upstyle. Caroline Coyne is a stellar makeup artist, my bridesmaids and I looked stunning, but not too mad up either. Tan was done by Jackie in The Beauty Spot on Clybaun Rd.

What did your bridesmaids wear?
Niamh, Triona and Colette wore turquoise. The ‘Rachel’ dress from Tracy Bridal. Chiffon material which flowed beautifully.

What was your ceremony like?
We had a church wedding. Corrib String Quartet set the ambiance nicely. The number of people who came to me afterwards who said they loved them! Fr Martin Glynn gave a short but beautiful sermon about looking after each other in married life.

Tell us about your wedding venue:
Barna Church was the perfect setting, looking out over Galway Bay. The Salthill Hotel were so professional. They put on a fabulous reception. Loads of drinks, prosecco, beers, gin bar… not to mention the ever-popular sweet cart. Hazel and Pauline assisted me throughout the day, they were outstanding. The food was fabulous… our guests are still talking about our meal, 6 months later!

What is your favourite memory from your wedding day?
Standing with Colm on the Diving Board in Blackrock, Salthill. Just us, by the sea, in our wedding gear. Fresh sea air!

Have you got any advice for other couples?
Chill. Keep it simple. Your wedding is about you and your future spouse…that is enough. Just remember why you’re doing this. The rest of it doesn’t matter.
