“ Having the chance to celebrate with our family and friends in a place that is so special to us felt like a dream come true.”

Length of engagement: 19 months | Wedding date: May 25th 2017
Wedding venue: Barberstown Castle, Kildare

We met… On a random weeknight during the summer of 2013 in a bar in Philadelphia. We had mutual friends who knew one another and hit it off immediately. We’ve been together ever since!

Our proposal… Domenic and I were spending the Christmas holidays in Ireland visiting my grandparents. He took me on a tour of Dublin Castle and proposed at the end of the tour in one of the rooms in the castle. I was so overcome with happiness and emotion. As we were leaving Dublin Castle, we noticed a mosaic on the sidewalk with The Stag’s Head on it and realised that this bar was right around the corner from us. This is the bar where my parents met over 35 years ago, so we decided to go there to have a celebratory drink before meeting my family for a surprise engagement dinner.

My look… my dress was Stella York Style 6247 (antique inspired). My hair and makeup were done by EF Creative Studios – Emma Farrell (makeup) and Michelle O’Halloran (hair).

His suit… was by Ike Behar.

Our ceremony… took place in Lady Chapel, Maynooth, Co. Kildare.

Our wedding theme/colours… Rose gold, pink and sage green.

We chose our videographer because… We really liked all of Limelight Wedding Films‘ online wedding videos and felt an instant connection with Gerry when we met him. We knew he would be the perfect person to capture our special day.

We chose our venue because… Barberstown Castle suited us perfectly. From the minute we drove up the long drive and stepped foot in the hotel, we couldn’t imagine having our wedding anywhere else. The hotel is absolutely gorgeous and truly makes you feel as if you have been transported to a different time. Each room is uniquely beautiful and we loved the fact that our guests only had to walk across the lawn to the banquet hall to attend our reception. The banquet hall was a stunning space with a very medieval feel that was breathtaking and really sealed the deal for us. It encompassed everything you imagine an Irish wedding would be. When we met the onsite wedding coordinator, Anna Nugent, we knew we were in the best hands possible to help us plan an overseas wedding.

My favourite part of the wedding day… Having the chance to celebrate with our family and friends in a place that is so special to us felt like a dream come true. Not only was our day beyond perfect, but the weather was extraordinary by Irish standards. It was very warm and sunny, so much so that people actually got sunburnt during the cocktail hour. It was nothing short of a miracle and really magical. It was a very emotional day, as we really felt the presence of our grandparents and uncle there with us in spirit.

My piece of advice for other couples… Relax and enjoy every minute of this day because it goes by so quickly. Take a little time for each other during the reception, as it’s easy to get caught up in all the festivities of the day. Lastly, make sure you have a great videographer and photographer. There is nothing better than being able to look back on your pictures and video and relive all those wonderful memories over and over again.
