wedding dress shopping

Wedding dress shopping is one of the most exciting parts of wedding planning for many brides. The anticipation of what you will find and how your wedding look will affect the day – yes it’s exciting but it can also feel overwhelming! Some brides will know instantly they have found the one, and that’s amazing for you but if you’re feeling a little apprehensive, that’s ok too. Today we’ve got eight tips to help you find your perfect wedding dress and not regret your choice.

1. Have a clear budget in mind

Knowing how much you want to spend before you start shopping is vital. It will help you close down your designer options and avoid any money conversations down the line when you’ve fallen in love with your choice. Remember to include a base cost for alterations and accessories in your budget, and be sure to share your budget with your bridal consultant. They will be able to steer you in the right direction.

2. Give yourself time, but not too much time

Shopping for your dream dress might be top of your priority list but making the decision at the right time is a factor to consider. You want enough time so you don’t feel rushed, but not so much time that you subconsciously keep up the search once the decision is made. It’s not unusual for brides to change their mind if they shop too early. We always advise 10 – 12 months before your wedding as the perfect time to find the one.

3. Shop trunk shows

You many have fallen in love with a particular designer you’ve discovered during your research. If that’s the case find your local stockist and enquire about any trunk shows they have coming up. Often brides will find discounts and offers during the trunk shows so they are well worth seeking out.

4. Stick with your personal style

Choosing a dress that makes you look the best version of yourself is key in successful wedding dress shopping. If you feel fabulous in it, you’ll wear it best and feel your best. By all means try on dresses that are outside your comfort zone, but don’t veer too far or you may regret it.

5. Shop with your best people

Everyone likes to shop differently. Some brides may want to shop alone, some will want one or two key people at their appointments and some will want as many opinions as possible. Decide early on who your best cheerleaders are and invite them. They may be your mum and best friend, or your sisters – bring the people who are going to be the most honest and helpful and always have your back.

6. Wear the correct underwear

The first layer, your underwear is the foundation to choosing the perfect dress. Nude shape wear is a great choice to wear as it will give you your best silhouette and avoid underwear lines.

7. Bring your heels

You will have a pretty good idea of what heel height you plan to wear on your wedding day going by what you feel comfortable in. For your dress appointments bring a pair of shoes with similar heel height (or your bridal shoes if you’ve purchased them). This will help you visualise how your gown will fall to the floor and make your decision making easier.

8. Enjoy it

Above all else remember there is no right or wrong dress, it’s all about personal preference and for those lucky brides, the feeling of finding the one. Making your choice won’t always come with an Instagram filter! Enjoy the process, try not to add extra stress and know you’re about to marry your love, no matter what your dress looks like!
