A Winter Theme Wedding with Christmas Lights

Real Weddings

They went with a winter theme. There were Christmas lights twinkling, furs, and sage green. The flowers were a mix of deep red, white and pine cones scattered throughout.

Names: Mary Celia Kilbane and Dermot Woods
Engagement length: 11 months
Wedding date: 2020-12-22
Wedding location: Glasson Lakehouse Athlone

Mary and Dermot were set up by mutual friends on a night out. They didn’t know they were being set up until they looked around and everyone else around them had disappeared. Dermot tried to propose three times, but various things got in the way. And then finally, one weekend, he got his chance. He filled the living room with balloons before Mary arrived home from work. Right there before her eyes was the question ‘Will You Marry Me?’ spelt out in balloons.

Mary wore an A-line Maggie Sottero dress, decorated with a Swarovski crystal belt and bejewelled cap sleeves. It had a scoop neck back and a trail of pearl buttons to the end of the train. She purchased it in Tracy Bridal in Galway and it was a perfect fit. She wore Mary Jane shoes by the Rainbow Club and jewellery by Rosie and Dott. Her veil was purchased in Belle Mariee in Athboy.
Dermot wore the Julius jacket and James waistcoat and trousers by Benetti. He wore Goor shoes in the colour Oxblood, all purchased in Eddie Murphy Menswear.

Mary’s Maid of Honour wore the Maye Gown in Sage from Folkster. She had jewellery from Carraig Donn and fur from Presley Blue. The Bestman wore the James suit from Benetti purchased in Eddie Murphy Menswear.

“Tara Carroll from Spiritual ceremonies looked after us so well. The ceremony was a spiritual one so we were able to have something really personal to us. We included the story of how we met. For many it was the first time hearing that story and everyone commented on how nice it was to hear it. We incorporated a lot of music into our ceremony. This was extra special as we had been to many concerts over our time together! Our amazing musician Ailbhe Hession was able to learn and play songs from Pearl Jam to Ed Sheeran with no difficulty. And she played them as if she had played them her whole life. It was very relaxed and we also were able to have prayers and readings to include everyone. We got married on my mum and dad’s 41st wedding anniversary and we used my Dad’s tie for the hand fastening ceremony. It was so special to me as we lost Dad last year.”

“Glasson Lake House in Athlone offers so much as a venue. The views are uninterrupted out over Lough Ree and it is absolutely stunning to look out from the ballroom and see it. The food was amazing and the service was second to none. We were looked after so well from the beginning of the day to the end of the day by all of the staff.  There had been renovations since we booked it however they have really added to it. Nearly gives off a ski chalet vibe which made everything all the cosier for a December wedding.”

Mary and Dermot chose Alex Zaradov to capture their wedding day. They booked him with just one month to go and he was so accommodating. They weren’t able to meet him beforehand, because of Covid, but he just fit right in. Mary and Dermot love the photos he took around the grounds and the variety of shots he got.

Their favourite memory from the Big Day was being able to recite their own vows. It came straight from the heart and was so special to both of them.

“Enjoy the planning process. Try not to stress too much about the what-ifs. Things have a way of coming together. Do not leave everything until the last minute even if you postpone. Enjoy the time spent with your family as we now know this is not always something we can take for granted. Take time out to spend with your Other Half on the day, just a few stolen moments is perfect.”
