Oriel House Hotel

Main Road, Ballincollig, Co. Cork

At Oriel House Hotel, sustainability is at the core of our wedding venue values. We prioritise waste segregation throughout our operations, ensuring that recyclable materials are properly sorted and disposed of. Our commitment to sustainability extends to our infrastructure, with the installation of EV charging points and LED-powered candles for candelabras, reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions. Our menu options are designed to reduce waste, offering set menus that prioritise efficiency and sustainability. Additionally, we utilise faux floral arrangements for wedding decorations, eliminating the need for fresh flowers and reducing water usage. Inspired by the success of solar panel installations at our sister property, Talbot Clonmel, we are exploring the implementation of solar panels to further reduce our reliance on non-renewable energy sources. Leftover food from wedding events is repurposed for staff meals, minimising food waste and supporting our local community. Furthermore, we have transitioned from paper-based wedding files to electronic folders, reducing paper usage and promoting digital sustainability practices. At Oriel House Hotel, sustainability isn’t just a goal—it’s a commitment we uphold in every aspect of our wedding venue operations.

Our commitment to sustainability extends to our floral arrangements, where along with seasonal fresh flowers we also incorporate delicate dried flowers that retain their beauty long after the last dance.

Now we know it’s not very glamorous and something one would associate with a wedding, but in 2023 we installed solar panels, something that one would also not expect to see on such an old and historic building! We are proud that we now run 15% of the business through solar, again reducing our carbon footprint and working more sustainably in our environment and local community.

Virginia Park Lodge

Virginia, Co Cavan

Virginia Park Lodge has had a heavy focus on sustainability, dating back to its inception in the 18th Century. Today, under the stewardship of Michelin Starred Chef Richard Corrigan we are always improving and nurturing the kitchen gardens with composting & manure, ensuring abundance from the land whilst protecting & maintaining a healthy rich soil. We utilise herb gardens, cutting gardens & polytunnels to extend the seasons making the garden productive all year round.

From our apple orchard, our walled garden bearing muscat grapes, our stables and more, there is always something new to discover – and something great for the kitchen to cook! Everything served at our weddings comes from our grounds and the local area, and any food waste from events is put back into our composting system to ensure your event is as sustainable as it can be. This comes with the added benefit of our produce being fresh, organic and delicious!

Boyne Hill House

Kilcarn, Navan, Meath

As part of our commitment to sustainability here at Boyne Hill House, we have decided to phase out the practice of our Brides bringing in flip-flops for their guests for late-night dancing. Most flip flops today are made from plastic threatening the health of the ocean with many travelling oceans and becoming a routine find during beach clean-ups. Plastic flip-flops also wear down easily transporting microplastic to the ocean through our waterways. We believe that prevention is far better than cure when it comes to plastic pollution: Our recommendation to brides is that they ask their guests to bring their own flat shoes to change into, but if they insist on providing flip-flops, there are rubber alternatives available to buy. H&M for example, does a sustainable flip-flop for 5euro. It costs more but they can buy less of them and feel better about doing their bit for the environment.

We are also joining the growing movement to eliminate miniature shampoo, conditioner and body-wash bottles worldwide to reduce plastic waste. As a result, we are phasing out all miniature plastic toiletries and will be switching to bulk dispensers and ceramic containers by the end of this year.

We are renowned for our delicious food here in Boyne Hill Estate and we buy local produce from the Boyne Valley where possible. To date, we have planted a range of berry bushes; raspberry; strawberries; blueberries; goji berries as well as tomatoes, potatoes, and rhubarb. These are all in our Victorian Walled Garden. This ‘Farm to Table’ approach is something which we are very excited about. We also have beehives at Boyne Hill House and have stared producing some honey to go with our Chef’s delicious home-made brown bread.
